Their Eyes Were Watching God Fishbowl Discussion
Food object
For my food, I made a pear pie. Much like Janie, pear pie is very unique. Very rarely are pears used in pies, and even less so as the main ingredient. Thus, just as Janie breaks social conventions with her actions, I break from tradition as well, but with food. In addition, pie looks the same on the outside, so people are totally clueless as to what is inside unless they are shown or told. Thus, people could see my pie for long periods of time and never know what it really has inside. This is similar to Janie, as people knew her for years, yet they never knew her true personality because she never showed them. In addition to all this, the pear tree serves as a symbol of Janie's sexuality throughout the novel, so pear pie was a natural choice. And to complete the allusion, I even carved a flower into the top of the pie, as Janie was most mesmerized by the pear blossoms.
